Belonging & Engagement Walks
The purpose of the Belonging & Engagement Walk is to sharpen and focus the inclusion efforts and instructional leadership lens through the gathering of observational data regarding school improvement and equity in the buildings. It is a way to “take the pulse” of the school, and also to provoke equity conversations based on patterns within these observations. It can also help to point out various areas that may have been previously overlooked and can be easily addressed.
The goals of the Belonging & Engagement Walk include:
Cultural Competence
Increasing cultural competence among educators fosters more inclusive and respectful classroom environments, where all feel seen, valued, and understood. This leads to stronger student-teacher relationships, improved academic engagement, reduced bias, and better learning outcomes. Culturally competent teachers can adapt instruction to meet varied cultural learning styles and needs, ultimately promoting equity and success for all students.
Culturally Responsive Focus Groups
Through facilitated student focus groups, we help schools gather meaningful, qualitative data that centers the lived experiences, perspectives, and needs of students. Led by an experienced consultant, these sessions create a safe space for students to share openly about what supports or hinders their engagement, sense of belonging, and academic success.
This process equips educators with authentic, student-driven insights that can inform more inclusive teaching practices, culturally responsive curriculum design, and stronger relationships with learners and their families. By listening deeply and intentionally, schools move beyond assumptions and toward equity-centered action that reflects the voices of those they serve. These focus groups not only elevate student voice but also empower educators to co-create learning environments where all students feel seen, heard, and valued.
Empathy Interviews
Empathy interviews are a powerful tool for gaining deeper insight into the lived experiences of students, families, and staff. By engaging in one-on-one conversations grounded in curiosity and compassion, districts can uncover unspoken needs, identify barriers to belonging, and better understand how policies and practices are felt on a human level. These interviews support equity-driven decision-making and help schools design more responsive, inclusive learning environments where every voice matters.
Strategic Team Development for Belonging
This collaborative learning experience is designed for school leadership teams committed to advancing equity and student success. By building cultural competence together, teams strengthen their shared understanding of how identity, culture, and systemic inequities impact students and families and how school policies and practices can either reinforce or disrupt those dynamics.
Each session equips administrators and staff with actionable tools and strategies that can be immediately applied within their schools. Working together as a team fosters alignment not just around what needs to change, but how to make those changes sustainably and inclusively. Outcomes include customized action plans, the development of “You Belong” commitments, and stronger, more cohesive teams ready to lead with purpose and create learning environments where all students thrive.
